The Patomkin Method

Perspective Reconstruction from Orthogonal Views helped with mini model

Accessories: cardboard, a pair of scissors, felt pen.

Task: a small building’s perspective based on orthogonal views

Obstacle of the imagination might also be a missing knowledge in drawing. We should draw more observing the nature. The base of freehand drawing is Object Drawing based on observation.

The general problem of perspective reconstruction task presented in drawing halls is that there is nothing to be observed. The real view is missing. We have little experience in depicting imaginary tasks.

Let’s try to model as a real view just the needed part of the enveloping structural frame using very few material and time!

Mini model procedure:

First step: which corner is the target?

Cut out of needed wall-stripes (facades added with felt pen or brush).

Simplifying we compress into one single main space plane all details of the chosen side. Later we shall develop this (stepping out: stairs, terrace, slabs’ volume or stepping back: thickness of wall, windows, openings, etc)

Put the mini-model on high pedestals I am getting a real views with low horizon. In order to observe extreme oblique lines (sky-silhouette).

Revolving slowly the half model in eye level in order to find the best façade proportions. Now we may carefuly balance the proportion between light and dark side, too.

The aim of my method is to drill live perspective sketching. Let’s observe in particular the distortion of extreme oblique lines (eaves, sills, corbels – originally parallel and horizontal, but in perspective converging - that means: looking as if they were oblique).

Summary

The mini model helps in finding the exact perspective distortion (belonging to our personal view point). The procedure gives a starting push and ensures a self control too. It makes an advance of the final perspective view right at the beginning. It gives an illusion of true appearance of the sky silhouette. It may help in solving other delicate details (e.g. interior with oblique ceiling).

My method accelerates the perspective reconstruction of non-regular systems (having no perpendicular axes, very fashionable nowadays) as well. Small changing at model’s corner affects immediately the skyline.

What is sure: most of the slabs are horizontal, we may grab at this! Corners with acute angles should be fixed on our mini model, observing their effect on structural framing grid.

In my opinion, modeling has a positive impact on the original project (if changing transmit to orthogonal views) and finally on the architecture itself.
